I was born too long ago and I no longer know how old I am. I've spent my life caught between efforts to be and efforts to become. I definitely have trouble with the state of my fingernails. I was the kid who hung out near the gates of the high school, smoking Marlboro's. Looking back towards my college years, I observe that I was a decent writer; I've grown terribly out of practice and my words often land on the page flat and dry, Swedish crackers. At the end of college, I spent time in Marin County, camping on Mt Tamalpais with the hippies, deer, and failed, homeless people. After college, I worked a varied set of jobs -- teaching English in Brooklyn and Philadelphia, renovating Brownstone houses in Park Slope, being a self-employed woodworker in New England, and then, finally, entering the growing electronic universe in the 80s, when FORTRAN had respectability and 128K was deemed a sufficient amount of memory for nearly any computational endeavor. I have moved from being the Director of Academic Computing at Smith College in the 80s, to directing Research Computing at Dana-Farber. Throughout all of this time, there has been a constant thread of music, from studying the piano in middle school and high school, singing in choir in high school, minoring in music history in college, and continuing on through my life with a deep love of rock-and-roll, various forms of indy art music, and many forms of composed/scored music. -- I hope I can add more later because I'm running out of energy --. I am lucky enough to have been dragged into LJ by my son,
object_holder, who took my nascent interest in music and composition and seems to have turned it into a major occupation of his.
